I don't think I watched any MSM reporting about Dorian, so I can't say anything about what they were reporting. I watch the NHC and the Weather Underground republishing of the same data (I like their WunderMap).
I will point out that there was a while when the center line of the path was projected to go up through the center of the state, and, until things got pretty far along, the eastern side of the state was still in the "cone of death". So, if the authors are ignoring the cone and just looking at the center line, I think they are misrepresenting the risk. I posted an article before Dorian swept past called something like "Those maps don't mean what you think they mean" that talked about that.
If your situation is such that riding out the storm is a bad option for you, waiting until you are certain it is going to hit you means you waited until it is too late, particularly in South Florida. There are a lot of people down there and only so many ways to escape. Had Dorian taken the path up the center of the state, you would have to go hundreds of miles before you could get out of its path. It is about 500 miles from Miami to Tallahassee. Dorian may have been slow moving, but if you cram enough cars onto the highways, they will go even slower.

I typically rely on the NHC as well, but the MSM hype is sometimes hard to ignore.
