So you may be aware if you follow me or Ben here or elsewhere on t'internet about forest fires near where we are. Fret not about us, we are safe.

However, there is a big, rapidly moving fire near Flix. @Paco Menzar Bien I hope you are OK dude.

The fire has consumed 500 hectares this afternoon and is described, at time of writing, by the Catalan Fire Service (Bombers) as "out of control". Several friends and acquaintances have been evacuated; at least one friend has seen their house and land incinerated today.

I stress that we are safe, it is still a long way away and there is the River Ebre/Ebro between us.

The Generalitat have declared the equivalent of a "state of emergency" in the locality according to the Bombers (Catalan Fire Service) Twitter.

One friend reports them sheltering in their stone house with all their animals (goats and chickens and dogs). The fire burnt everything outside but they were safe inside.

This just makes me appreciate the Aussie Rural Fire Service even more. Was searching the internet for a live fire map of the Catalunya blaze and came up empty, though perhaps the important resources are all in Spanish and I just don't know how to best formulate the query. In Oz, we've got interactive maps and phone apps that are updated "at least" hourly and for the larger fires show the approximate boundaries of the blazes.

Whoa that sucks. I have noticed no news reports in US news... They seem to be fascinated by sploding drone toys. And big birds is the hot Euro news apparently.

Latest statement from the Generalitat (not my translation):

"The Firefighters worked overnight with 80 land allocations in the fire yesterday afternoon in the burn Ribera d'Ebre. In addition to ground units, working seven and two seaplanes aerial Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Emergency Military Unit (9 120 troops and vehicles) and heavy machinery.

The fire has a perimeter of 128 kilometers, 14 kilometers long, and has already affected more than 4,000 hectares affected several municipalities: Torre Espanyol Vinebre, Palma de Ebro, Flix and Maials, according to the latest estimate of the Corps of Rural Agents. There is a thirty people evacuated from the houses that are in the area.

There are currently five roads cut : the C12 (between Maials and Flix), the T703 (the Palme d'Ebre), the C233 (between Bovera and Flix), the T714 (Tower Spanish) and T2237 (between Vinebre and Palma d'Ebre).

Civil Protection of the Government has activated the alert phase of Plan Forest Fire Catalonia, INFOCAT . Remains active also alert PROCICAT Plan."

all that burning should help warm the atmosphere a wee bit further. My grandmother was always undecided whether the world would end in floods or in fire.

Stay safe until the next one. A forest fire already narrowly missed our village a few weeks ago, and burned many houses and buildings in the nearby kibbutz, so that they had to move the children of their kindergarten over to us.
